ITEMS NEEDED FOR LUMBERJACK HALL OF FAME!
PIGEON FORGE, TN ̶ A new lumberjack attraction is being constructed in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Rob Scheer, President of Lumberjack Sports International and the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show, is adding the Great Tennessee Lumberjack Feud as a new chapter to lumberjack sports.
A 25,370 square foot indoor arena is in construction for the Lumberjack Feud, which will be a dinner-show that features competing lumberjacks in 13 different events ranging in log rolling, chopping, sawing, and climbing. The show is expected to open in Summer 2011. In addition to providing visitors a dramatized production of lumberjack sports, Scheer expects to host future lumberjack competitions, such as the STIHL Dogs & Logs World Championships, for years to come. Lastly, the arena will include the Smoky Mountain Forest History Center and the Lumberjack Hall of Fame.
Lumberjack Hall of Fame
The Lumberjack Hall of Fame, sponsored by STIHL, will portray the history of lumberjack sports as they have evolved out of the logging camps in the 1800’s to today’s international broadcast of competitions. The Hall of Fame will focus on the sport progressing through different eras; from about 1890 to 1960 where competitions were localized at festivals, to the era of ABC’s Wide World of Sports began broadcasting competitions from 1965 to 1982, then the development of the STIHL Timbersports Series on ESPN in 1982, and finally the addition of the Ironjack competitions in 1996.
For the Lumberjack Hall of Fame, we are looking for nominations of not only outstanding athletes in each of the eras, but also identifying who have been the major founders and promoters of the sport, for example Tony Wise. Therefore, the inductees will not be current athletes, but persons and/or athletes who have been instrumental in the success of the sport as we know it today.
We Need Your Help!
The Hall of Fame is also in construction, and we are looking for assistance from past and current athletes to help transform the Hall of Fame into an unforgettable insight into lumberjack sports. We are compiling factual information about the sports past, videos, photographs, personal stories, memorabilia, trophies, and used equipment from all of the eras mentioned above. If you were involved in the competitions of these eras, we need your help!
Items Needed for Hall of Fame:
We are in need of photos, videos, memorabilia and personal stories from competitions throughout the eras to enhance the experience of the Lumberjack Hall of Fame. Memorabilia could be t-shirts or banners from events, cookies from sawing events, score cards, ect. Personal stories from your experiences as an athlete during the ESPN years, for example, can entail favorite and/or unexpected events, comical incidences, proudest moments, stories depicting the relationship with other athletes, ect. Also, if you were an athlete who competed across the different eras, what changes did you see and experience from a competitor’s point of view?
Equipment can include, but not limited to, crosscut saws, traditional and toe-gaffs, climbing ropes, and of course a variety of axes that were used in these events. If anyone has an old blown-up hot saw that has no use, we could use it! We are going to depict the progression and variety of equipment throughout the eras, and we cannot accumulate these items without your help! Donations are welcome! Otherwise, we are willing to purchase items at a reasonable price OR we can lease the items for a set period of time for display.
Vote on Nominees for the Lumberjack Hall of Fame
We are also looking for athlete’s themselves to nominate on the inductees to the Hall of Fame. A board will compile all of the nominations received and then decide on the final inductees.
To vote on the inductees to the Lumberjack Hall of Fame, please email me a list of (at least) five people you would like to see inducted in its first years. Be sure to mention why you think that person should be inducted. Again, nominees should be from any of the eras and is a representative either as an outstanding athlete and/or have had a major influence on the progression of lumberjack sports.
Other suggestions on what you would like to see in the Lumberjack Hall of Fame are welcome! If you have any questions about the Lumberjack Feud or the Lumberjack Hall of Fame, please feel free to contact me either via email, Lindsay@lumberjackfeud.com, or at 865.428.8688.
We absolutely cannot complete this project without the help from the athletes themselves! Please support the Lumberjack Hall of Fame as a new advancement of lumberjack sports. Feel free to forward this release to any person(s) who may be interested.
We thank you in advance for any assistance you may be able to provide. And good luck in 2011 season!
